Canadian Government Seizes Russian Cargo Plane

 Canada takes action in response to Russia's war with Ukraine

The Canadian government has taken a significant step by ordering the seizure of a Russian cargo plane at Toronto Pearson International Airport. This action comes as a direct response to Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine, showcasing that the consequences of their actions continue to unfold. The federal government made this announcement on Saturday, coinciding with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's surprise visit to Kyiv.

The grounded Antonov 124 has been parked at Toronto's main airport since Canada implemented a ban on Russian aircraft entering its airspace in February 2022. This seizure serves as a strong message of solidarity with Ukraine and a means to exert pressure on President Putin. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra emphasized the determination to take any necessary actions against Russia.

The Canadian authorities, in coordination with Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, are actively working towards the transfer of the AN-124 and other assets to Ukraine. Should the asset be forfeited to the Crown, Canada is committed to collaborating with the Ukrainian government to utilize it for compensating victims of human rights abuses, restoring international peace and security, or contributing to Ukraine's reconstruction.

The Russian cargo plane is believed to be owned by a subsidiary of Volga-Dnepr Airlines LLC and Volga-Dnepr Group, which have faced recent sanctions from Canada. These sanctions, imposed against entities complicit in Russia's war in Ukraine, demonstrate Canada's determination to hold accountable those who have profited from the illegal conflict.

By authorizing the seizure of the Antonov 124, Canada reaffirms its stance against impunity for those involved in Russia's aggression. This action highlights the international community's united front in condemning Russia's actions and standing in solidarity with Ukraine.
